HABIT 1: BE PROACTIVE

This is the continuation of my blog "Daily Reflections for Highly Effective Teens". I recommend that you must read first that blog for you to understand the things that has been discussed here. You may find it here.

When I first saw the word "BE PROACTIVE", I thought it's all about being a positive thinker. Well, my instincts drives me in a right path. I'm a little bit correct but there's a deep yet simple explanation about being a proactive. You want to know what does Proactive mean? Well, let's find out.

Sean Covey, the author of the 7 Habit of highly effective teens said that being a proactive is the key to unlocking all of the other habits and that's why it comes first. There are two types of people in this world-the PROACTIVE and the REACTIVE-those who take responsibility for their lives and those who blame; those who made it happen and those who get happened to.

The difference between the Proactive people and the Reactive people is that Reactive people make choices based on impulse while Proactive people make choices based on values.

Reactive People

  • one easily offended
  • blame others
  • get angry and say things they later regret
  • whine and complain
  • wait for things happen to them
  • change only when they have to

Proactive People

  • are not easily offended
  • take responsibility for their choices
  • think before they act
  • bounce back when something bad happens
  • always find a way to make it happen
  • focus on things they can do something about and don't worry about things they can't

The fact is, we can't control everything that happen to us. We can't control the color of our skin, who will win the UAAP Cheer dance Competition this season, who will win the NBA Finals, what team does LeBron James choose to sign his contract, where we are born, who will be our parents, how much tuition will be next fall, or how others might treat us. But there is one thing we can control. How we respond to what happen to us. And that is what counts. This is why we need to stop worrying about things we can't control and start worrying about things we can.

As a student, I'm not saying that I'm a 100% Proactive Person. But we have this so called DETERMINATION to obtain that kind of manner. Determination is necessary to achieve a certain goal. For example, you want to have a contented job, in real world,  you don't wait for that job to fall in your lap. You must go after it. Don't be so lazy to attain that job. You need to put an extra effort to achieve the job that you want. As they said, "Hardwork really pays off".

To reach your goals in life, you must seize the initiative. If you're feeling bad about not being asked out on dates, for instance, don't just sit around and sulk. Do something about it. Take it as a challenge and find ways to meet people. Be friendly and try smiling a lot. Ask them out, They may not know how great you are.

But, how to develop a clear picture of where we want to go in our life? Who is the driver of our life? How to think and decide that goes in a right direction? You want to know the answer? Wait for my next blog. :)

  1. between stimulus and response there is a space: choice. because we are not animals, we are not predetermined to act on certain provocation. we are always have the freedom to choose how we feel. ^_^
